In 2014, when I lived in Austin, my buddy Jeff Bradley just happened to be in town as a guest speaker for a conference. We decided to use that opportunity to explore the city along with our good friend Michael Roach. One of our day-jaunts involved driving out to fabled Luckenbach, TX for the Sunday evening Songwriters Circle. With a brief stop at the LBJ homestead en-route, we headed west.

Luckenbach is a small privately owned old-timey town in the middle of the central Texas scrub. The signs to get there are regularly stolen and the phone signal wasn't strong enough to use our mapping apps. Luckily, Roach knew the way and we pulled into a dark oak grove at dusk that carefully protected this treasure of musical lore.

The were a few writer's circles around camp fires, a gift shop, a stage and a few other random buildings I don't accurately recall, but everyone was insanely friendly. Just like a bluegrass jam, each circle would start with someone who would talk about their song, run through the chord progression and then we'd all play along. I had my fiddle and Jeff had his guitar, so it was a real hoot. The highlight for me, and I'm sure for Jeff, was everyone singing Jeff's song, "Nashville Killed Country" at the top of their lungs.

Chorus to Nashville Killed Country by Jeff Bradley:

"Nashville killed country, Chicago killed the blues.

just like everybody else, Hey! I play guitar too.

Got me a 10 gallon hat and a fancy rhinestone suite.

Nashville Killed Country and now they're after you"
